Bouyei is one of the many ethnic minorities in China. This story tells the Bouyei legend of the sun: In ancient times, there were twelve suns in the sky. The suns shot out flames everyday, scorching the land and drying up the rivers. Because nothing could survive aboveground, people had to live in underground caves. Salvation came when two siblings, both skilled in archery, devised a plan to shoot down the suns.
