Many popular legends and mysterious stories have been passed on within Chinese communities since the earliest historical times, and perhaps earlier. Some of these stories were recorded in ancient classical books, while some were communicated by word of mouth; some became merged with real historical events and persons, and some were just imaginative folklore based on ideas about magic. Over time, more than one hundred gods and goddesses have featured in these tales, such as the Rain God, who were worshiped by people in their daily lives. We have rewritten the stories in modern Chinese, based on available original texts and records, and generously illustrated them with the aim of stimulating the unlimited imagination and creativity in every child.
